Took a Break, But Ready to Return

Hey everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything about my writing and the status of my memoir.

It’s been an incredibly busy time with the transatlantic move from New York to the suburbs of London, settling my two teenage daughters into a new school, unpacking into a new house and trying to kick-start my Executive Coaching career. I’ve had my hands full and scarcely had time to think, let alone write.

Given everything I’ve had going on, I took a step back to recharge, reflect, and focus on life outside of the page. I also needed to give myself some grace… I found that I was beating myself up so much for not making the time to write. I had to give myself permission to take a break from writing.

But now… I’m excited to say that I’m getting back to it! ✍️✨ I’ve missed the words, the flow, and the process.

In terms of update on my existing project:

I’m thrilled to share that my memoir, ODUDUWA CRESCENT is currently in the hands of my incredible agent, Matt Bailer at Sanford J Greenburger  out of NYC 📚✨

With Matt’s expertise, we’re on the lookout for the perfect publisher to help bring this story to life. The initial wave of pitches targeted US based publishers during the summer, and starting last week, we have begun targeting an incredible list of UK publishers.

Rejections have been coming thick and fast as expected, which has been sobering if I’m honest, but feedback has been generally positive. I’m hearing that my writing is good, the Nigerian setting is fascinating and the protagonist (my father), is so compelling BUT, memoir is a tough genre if you have no platform and you are not a celebrity.

We were expecting  to hear this this feedback, so we will press on – hopefully someone out there will be willing to take a chance on me and my little story.

I’m beyond grateful for the support I’ve received so far and can’t wait to see where this journey takes me. If you’re a fellow writer or have any publishing tips to share, I’d love to hear from you! 💬

I’ve also started thinking about new writing… I’m toying with a fiction idea as well as perhaps a collection of non-fiction short stories based on my experiences living in the suburbs of America. We will see. For me at this point, I’m just happy to be back thinking about writing.

Here’s to fresh beginnings, new stories, and diving back into the craft.
